Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
