The United States Vows a Substantial Assistance Sum, Delivering a Direct Message to United Nations.
In a move that pairs generosity with a firm ultimatum, the United States has vowed $2 billion to support UN emergency relief programmes. But, this contribution was accompanied by a direct message for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Announcement Amid Wider Budget Reductions
The funding announcement came against a backdrop of substantial reductions in American support of humanitarian operations. Further cuts are expected from other key donors including European nations. The official, President Trump's Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, made the announcement together with the UN's top humanitarian official.
"This contribution will be crucial for saving countless lives," affirmed the United Nations' humanitarian chief. However, this sum represents only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which previously totaled approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
Funding with Specific Conditions
The latest US aid is not without restrictions. The money is focused on a select group of 17 countries, including Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Notably, Afghanistan and Yemen have been excluded.
The representative justified this by citing concerns that in Afghanistan, aid money were being diverted to militant groups. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of taxpayers' money going to organizations designated as terrorists," he stated firmly.
Furthermore, the restrictions prohibit funding for projects related to tackling global warming, which were described as not "essential for survival" and against "the US interest."

Issuing a blunt warning, the US official told the UN that it must "adapt or die." He stated that the American "coffers is not open to agencies that just want to cling to outdated ways."
