Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

At first glance, this work may look closer to an arduous university quiz than the latest pop album from an artist who just had a last single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided across 4 separate movements and voiced in 13 tongues, it is a head-spinning symphonic work investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, often through the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the work of contemporary pop stars seem rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in escape dry intellectual posturing is nothing short of miraculous, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions are far higher here, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly raises this fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. When she's tearing hearts apart, the listener still desire to be right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful energy shines clearly during a stunning piano-led ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down with cartoonish force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in you rarely quite know—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Almost every track finishes at a completely distinct point than where it started. One moment examines the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate symphony only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has become her first work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. That feat is repeated on a different expansive track that expands and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires time to fully explore but never seem like hard work. While other big pop albums of the year felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
