Yet, he disputed one particular crime he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old child.

The accused was remanded in custody before a subsequent court date on late November.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She said his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a summer program which he ran.

Ruben engaged in a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She told the court Ruben had played this game with the children "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the next day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his family member had concerns about the activities, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said items including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were found, and his family member contacted the police about his suspicions.

She explained the man proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six children that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that point," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining the police response of the situation.

The legal representative explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the family member notified the police again.

She explained Ruben then played the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
