A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
